Queens of Rock - Friday 30th November - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

A nice Friday evening in Sutton for some classic rock covers. Support band, the "Guitar Godz" work their way through some Hendrix, Clapton, Moore, Fleetwood Mac and a little too much Toto before become the instrumentalists for the ladies. The "Queens" add lots of Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Cher, Bonnie Tyler etc for a good fun evening.

Dan Baird & Homemade Sin - Monday 21st May, Boom Boom Club, Sutton

Some excellent news in that Dan Baird is over his recent health scare which forced him to miss the last tour. I believe this was only his second show back and it was a belter. Decent set, great band as always and fantastic to see Dan looking so healthy.

One very pedantic point - Dan usually does a CCR or John Fogerty cover in "Two For Tuesday"- often "Proud Mary", occasionally something else. To fit the song lyrics, why doesn't he do 2?

Setlist

State of Quo - Friday 20th April - Boom Boom Club, Sutton United FC

A choice of 2 local Quo tribute bands this evening. John Coghlan's Quo were at the Hhalf Moon in Putney or "State of Quo" in Sutton. Partly due to an early start on Saturday to go to France, I opted for the most local option without the former Status Quo drummer.

The venue was busier that I expected and the band were decent. The instrumentation was spot on and a varied setlist should have catered for all tastes. As the lead singer stated, they "don't come down south very often", but hopefully they will again soon as I will certainly be returning.

Setlist
Caroline
Backwater
Mad About The Boy
All Stand Up (Never Say Never)
Creepin’ Up On You

Credence Clearwater Review - Saturday 3rd March - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

Brief Review: We dodged the remains of the snow and ice for a fun evening with this excellent Credence Clearwater Revival / John Fogerty tribute band. All the band are good, but the brilliant Dale Taylor on Vocals and Guitar is clearly the main man. Let's hope that the next time they make the trek down from Cambridgeshire, there are more people to enjoy their performance.

Dan Baird & Homemade Sin - Monday 19th June - Boom Boom Club, Sutton Utd FC

A Monday night - never the best time for a gig, but this is one of my favourite artists and kind enough to play 15 minutes from home! Therefore on a very warm summer evening it was off to an indoor gig.

Unfortunately the venue was not as packed as the band deserve, but predictably we got a hot and sweaty romp through a mixture of Dan's material from across the years. I do get what he says about "New Is Good", but feel like the older material (especially Georgia Satellites stuff with which he made his name) is relegated slightly too much into the set and I would be among the minority who see him enough to recognise the more obscure material. Certainly by the number of GS T shirts in the crowd, and the fact that it's a venue he hasn't played before, I would have thought a few more well known older songs would have been appropriate.

That said, it was nice to hear Warner E Hodges take the vocals for "Don't Pass Me By".

Dan is legendary for cutting from the set any songs that are requested from the crowd. I am considering using this to my advantage next time I see him by calling for those I don't want to hear!

Anyway, all this is being slightly picky. As is usually the case, this was a great evening of Rock N Roll in suburbia and the merchandise stall seemed to be doing good business afterwards. Come back soon Dan.

Setlist anyone please?

Creedence Clearwater Review - Friday 10th March - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

With no February shows, this was my first gig in ages and a decent tribute act to the fine music of Creedence Clearwater Revival and John Fogerty. Thought the singer was really good - he'd be an excellent fit in the current incarnation of Slade. And for a casual fan of CCR and JF, they played pretty much everything I expected to hear.

Cregan & Co - Tuesday 30th December - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

So, 2014 comes to an end with an enjoyable evening with Jim Cregan and his excellent band. A packed Boom Boom club the day before New Year's Eve witnessed 2 hours of mainly Road Stewart material (with Ben Mills on vocals) as well as a couple of other snippets from Jim's career with Family and Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.

As is often the case there were some amusing anecdotes from Jim and it's nice that he still plays the actual guitars that many of these classic songs were recorded on. Go and see them during 2015 if you can.

2014 has personally been a good year for gigs, this one being my 38th of the year (probably highest total for 10 years or so) and there have been very few (if any) duds amongst them. Highlights included the classic Quo line-up "final ever" shows at Hammersmith, Ian Hunter at Brighton and the Bryan Adams London shows.

Here's wishing all readers a very happy and prosperous 2015.

Cregan & Co - Monday 30th December - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

Jim Cregan and Ben Mills at the Boom Boom Club
Another evening of Rod Stewart hits, courtesy of Jim Cregan and his band. A strange mix of old rockers and young ladies here to ogle at vocalist Ben Mills  makes for interesting a people watching at their shows, but the musicianship and songs means that it's the performance that always commands attention. A busier than expected hall was uncomfortably hot at times, but the 2 set show sent everyone on their way happy.

Thunder's Harry James was on drums - a bit strange seeing him again so close to the Wolverhampton Christmas shows.
