Johnny Warman - Friday 3rd May - Boom Boom, Sutton

Brief review:

The evergreen Mr Warman. I've lost count of how many times I've seen him at the Boom Boom and elsewhere and he always delivers. This was the 60's and 70's Rock Show version of his "Magic Bus" lineup and featured rock classics from those eras. I just hope the promotion issues at the Boom Boom get sorted and the shows actually get advertised to increase the audience numbers.

Venue and View:  Standing on the floor, central near the front.

Brief review:

A late decision to pop along for the 60's and 70's classic covers night. Very good indeed with Marcus Flynn excelling on lead guitar!

Johnny Warman - Sunday 15th September - Cheam Food and Drink Festival

Stage View from The Sutton Guardian
One Liner: A scarcely believable 17,000 people turned up to the Food and Drink Festival in Cheam Park. Many would have seen or heard Johnny Warman as the headline music act. We were towards the back, but Johnny sounded in good form ripping through the best of his 60's and 70's revue. Even finishing (surprisingly) with Hi Ho Silver Lining.

Johnny Warman - Friday 18th January - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

One Liner: Not seen Johnny for a while but, as expected, he was in good voice and performed an entertaining selection of well chosen covers from the 60's and 70's. He was joined by the excellent Marcus Flynn on lead guitar.

One Line Review: The normal solid show from Johnny and the boys with a great range of 60's and 70's British Rock classics.

Johnny Warman - Monday18th May - Bull's Head, Barnes

This "Total Who Show" to celebrate 50 years of the Who was billed as "unplugged". The venue is the rear stable-type room at the rear of the excellent Bull's Head in Barnes. When seated, the capacity looks to be less than a hundred and the usual Monday evening events are of the blues and jazz variety.

The evening started with a young female singer - songwriter (sorry I can't remember her name) who, armed with an acoustic guitar, sang some of her own material interspersed with some covers including a very nice version of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". All very pleasant.

Caught out by the very quick turn-a-round, I was at the bar when the band opened with Baba O'Riley. Acoustic it was not. Returning to our front table seat, we then enjoyed 100 odd minutes of classic, ear shattering versions of Who classics. Phil Spalding was guesting on lead guitar and his effortless playing was spot on. Bass, Drum & Keyboard duties were more than competently filled too and Johnny Warman's usual excellence enthralled the small crowd, some of whom politely heckled about "when is the unplugged bit?".

Actually, that does raise a semi-serious point. I was looking forward to hearing the Who songs in an acoustic setting and had bought tickets and travel on that basis. I really enjoyed the evening as it was played, but what if I hadn't? The show had been especially billed to highlight the unplugged aspect.

Anyway, a moot point for me as it was excellent anyway. I shall be back for more - with volume or without.

Johnny Warman's Magic Bus - Friday 16th May - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

Johnny Warman, back at the Boom Boom with his "Mods" replacement band - "Johnny Warman's Magic Bus". 2 hours of classic Mods v Rockers including a song from the 80's ! The Rolling Stones "Start Me Up". Good stuff, but not as much Who material as we'd expected.

Johnny Warman's Magic Bus - Friday 8th November - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

A low key gig at the Boom Boom. Variously billed as "the Total Who Show" and "Magic Bus" it did what it said on the tin. 100 minutes of brilliant Who material.
I can only say that Mr Warman's address book must contain an endless array of fantastic musicians. I really enjoyed the guitarist here, but for me the keyboard player was brilliant. Johnny gave his normal 100% and the smiles on the audiences' faces said it all.

We'll shout for "Bell Boy" next time!

All Right Now - Friday 18th January - Boom Boom Club, Sutton

So it appears it's all change in the musical world of Johnny Warman. He appears to have left "The Mods" (and formed "Magic Bus" playing similar material) and presumably there's no more "Four Bills and a Ben"?

Additionally, this band "All Right Now" have migrated from playing nearly all "Free" and "Bad Company" material to a range of classic rock. Speaking as a fan of both the aforementioned bands, I think this is a good thing - it should widen their potential audience and give them a chance to mix up the setlist.

Tonight's show was good and contained a few surprises - not least relatively modern songs like "Rockin' In The Free World" and "Gimme All Your Lovin'". The band were spot on with the lead guitar especially impressive.

The Mods - Sutton United FC - Friday 1st September

First gig for a while and a nice Friday night 10 minute stroll from home. The Mods are always worth seeing - a collection of fine musicians who who may well have seen in the bands of famous artists on bigger stages.

Tonight, we got the lineup of Johnny Warman, Steve Byrd, Johnny Marter, Steve Barnacle and Spike Edney. This was actually a birthday bash for the promoter so we got the best of the Mods and 4 Bills and a Ben (their alta-ego). As the Mods they play covers of the 60's Rock and Britpop scene (think the Who, Small Faces, Kinks etc) and as the 4 Bills more a soulful sound (Tina Turner, Athur Conley, Robert Johnson, James Brown etc).

The highlight for me (as usual with these guys) was the extraordinary guitar playing of Steve Byrd - the guy is brilliant and makes it look amazingly easy. He used to be in Tina Turner's band and supposedly wrote the music for Baywatch (which of course, was why we all watched it!)

Only criticism was that the 4 bar staff were nowhere near enough to cope with the demand and so service was slow. Still, at least thanks to the new relaxed laws we could enjoy a pint in the Plough afterwards.

All in all an excellent 2 hours of great music - if you get the chance to see these guys, do !
